Special
Services
If you are a Veteran, or a relative of a
Veteran, who keeps their medals and insignia from military service stored
in a drawer or packed away in a box, I believe you should display those
items of honorable service to our country. I also believe it is
important that future generations of our families know about the
sacrifices and service of our nations Veterans.

- Obtain
Your Medals
-
In most cases, the U.S. military does not issue Service
medals upon
a veteran's discharge. They document the award of that service
on the discharge papers and leave it up to the Veteran to apply for
issue of those medals. Decorations, on the other hand are
generally issued during active service or shortly thereafter, but not
always.
Medals that were authorized but not issued may be obtained from the
government upon written request. The request must be made by the
Veteran, or, if the veteran is deceased, the "next of
kin". On receipt of the request, the
National Archives, National Personnel Records Center in St. Louis, Mo.
completes a record search, and verifies all medals, citations, badges
and awards authorized. They send an order for those items to a
distribution warehouse in Philadelphia and other sites where the order
is filled and sent to the Veteran.
You should be aware that this process can take up to two
years. My experience has shown from eight weeks to 26
months. There is no charge or fee for these medals. Since
there are different addresses for some of the branches of service, you
may contact me by email or ground mail, and I will reply with the
correct address. Please include the Veterans branch of service
and dates of service. This information, plus statement of awards
will be found on the veterans DDForm 214, which is the release from
active duty document. If you do not have this document,
send me an e-mail, and I will do everything possible to assist you
with obtaining a replacement.
If the Veterans medals and awards have previously been issued by
the government, but have been lost, I can provide you with a source
from private vendors, to obtain these items. Once the government
has issued them, they will not issue them again. There is no fee for
this
service.
- Presidential
Memorial Certificate
-
I can also provide you with the government source to obtain a
Presidential Memorial Certificate, honoring a deceased Veterans
service, signed by the current sitting President of the United
States. Again, there is no fee for this service.
